It seems that Melbourne Uni's IT Service Desk are distributing the following ( previous here):To all Telephone and Voice mail Subscribers,

There have been reports of a telephone scam being conducted within Australia.

Details of the scam are:

You will receive a telephone call from a number from the list below. The number will hang-up and leave you with a 'Missed Call' alert. If you call the number back you will receive a message saying you have won $40 and to call another number to collect your prize. Both numbers are chargeable at $50 per call.

The list of numbers seen to date are:

Telstra have confirmed this is a real scam and that it has been reported to TISSC

These numbers are able to be dialed directly from most telephone handsets, and are considered 'in dial' numbers going to a large telephone exchange and therefore it is not a definitive list. It is likely that the following number ranges are also part of the scam.

(02) Numbers
  • (02) 8303 83xx
  • (02) 8404 22xx
(03) Numbers
  • (03) 8102 95xx
  • (03) 8558 05xx
  • (03) 8558 14xx
  • (03) 9540 29xx
  • (03) 9540 51xx
  • (03) 9855 29xx
Where 'xx' is any number 00 to 99.

Please exercise caution if you receive a missed call from any of these numbers.

So it looks like cash is the bait. Hardly surprising.
