They decided not to play by the rules, so they got thumped. Granted there's no way they could have known that "breaking rules" = "bad" after the government they've had, but that's got nothing to do with it.
Oh, sure, the system they use is mightily fucked, and they had every right to be pissed off at it -- but the rules said X, and they said Y, and the maths was clear. Nobody has any right to be surprised, or to expect any more special treatment than is already prepared for in the rules.
So your basic premise is flawed, I believe, because it's not a simple matter for the party machine to have mercy on the rebels, because to do so would be a matter of them deciding to ignore the exact rules that everyone knew Florida and Michigan were breaking. Everyone went in with their eyes open, so it's unlikely that anyone is going to blink now.
Not that it makes much difference - Obama may have been fatally weakened by Clinton's insane blindness, and that means another four years of government by a senile Republican, which is pretty much exactly what the country's used to...
