I've got my Mum visiting from Australia at the moment.  And it's Thanksgiving in the US tomorrow.  She's all excited about being over here for Thanksgiving because it's a big holiday and an occasion we don't celebrate in Aus, so she wants us to join in and celebrate the day big time ( Read more... )

Dude. If you're 'celebrating' by eating a ginormous meal? You're celebrating Thanksgiving. Like Christmas, the origins of the holiday have long since fallen to the wayside. Personally? I don't like celebrating the feast of us screwing over a bunch of Native Americans, which - let's face it - that's what the founding Pilgrims did.

So, welcome to America. Eat until you have to unzip your pants, until you moan, until you lapse into a triptophan-induced coma. That's thanksgiving. Have a happy one. :) Make Dean PROUD.

We picked up on the food part of the holiday pretty quickly. We have an embarrassment of food. All in the name of giving thanks.

By tomorrow arvo we plan on being fully loaded. Pants may need to be surgically removed.

Okay, I was comment along similar lines, but kimonkey7 said it all. It's about food! Incredible amounts of food. Conspicuous consumption of food. Eat, eat and be merry, for tomorrow you diet.

The food part we have covered. And how! We're going to be dining out for a week on this one meal.

Sounds like we're on the right track for Thanksgiving then. This time tomorrow it will be pants avast.

Enjoy your first Thanksgiving! It's all part of the experience of living in another country. It was such a long day at work today I kept thinking "If I was American, I wouldn't have to be here today!".

Sounds like you have got the basics covered (but I'm with you - not stuffing a Turkey for anyone). Is this the first time your Mum has been over to visit? The boys must be excited. Have a great day, anyway - and I'd love to hear an Aussies take on Thanksgiving once it's all done and dusted :)

We have the basics WELL covered. We have turkey and EIGHT veg for chrissake. EIGHT! I think we may be overdoing the thankfulness.

We have also (at Mum's urging) bought table decorations. A turkey illustrated tablecloth, turkey illustrated napkins and a large fold out turkey centrepiece. I think the Americans would laugh at us if they could see our version of Thanksgiving.

So how was the eight veg? I told And about it and we couldn't figure out which 8 veg you had...

And you had a turkey illustrated table cloth? W. T. F.?? I completely and utterly disown you as a friend....
