there's practically nothing more valuable that you can give to others than some of your time. it's also something that often leaves a lasting impression.
Cakes only count as myself. After mum died, I just went into the ward and had a chat to the nurses and thanked them for their efforts. I went back maybe 6 months on to have a chat, still remembered me, and again thanked them. Also sent them a letter. All they were really after is the acknowledgement of their job. They do it because they can help someone and some people like to be able to help those in need... Acknowledging and appreciating them when they've done a good job is all you really can and should do.

the other suggestion was getting a few cakes delivered to them for morning tea.
