NaNoWriMo

Oct 16, 2010 20:22

As I related on Facepalm, I was telling myself a story on the way home from work, like you do, and realized I had my NaNoWriMo theme. No idea if I'll make 50K words, but it'll probably be close, and it'll make me happy to write it. It might bend a rule or two, but the writing is the main thing, right?

Apparently so. In their FAQ there was a place that said, "If you think you're writing a novel, then we think you're writing a novel." The emphasis seems to be on sheer word volume rather than what they're about.

The Austin NaNo community is pretty active. They have lots of write-ins at local coffeehouses, and you can even sign up to host your own. (I did that at Flightpath and actually got people to show up!) The ML (Municipal Liaison), LazyM (Emily), is really sweet. I haven't decided if I'll do it in Seattle. It was a great catharsis after finishing my dissertation, though -- then I did it for the next four years too.
