The Last Few Weeks

My holiday, in a nutshell (listshell?)

The Good

  • Meeting new people (particularly ones from the same city as me!)
  • Catching up with old friends.
  • Seeing the Dandenongs and the Yarra Valley, both parts of Melbourne I hadn't visited before.

I hate American tourists, too. And I am one. (Hee! But not for long, perhaps! I'm seriously entertaining notions of moving to Canada this spring!) Sorry that one was obnoxious.

Oh, there are a great many non-obnoxious Americans (yourself included!), both of the tourist and non-tourist varieties. This fellow was...beyond ridiculous. Having spent a lot of time working with Germans, Blackadder's 'Don't mention the war' is a very useful dictum, at least until you know the person well enough to have a serious conversation on the issue. Making mock Hitler salutes and jokes about following orders is definitely going too far (although I confess by this point I was dying for one of the well-built Swiss men to thump him). And if you're trying to pick someone up (first me - erk - and then someone he met in the bottle shop), it's not a bad idea to keep your stories at least somewhat straight ( ... )
