I guarantee you that if she'd killed Neville, I'd still be dealing with it, even after all this time. He was the one character that I was really worried about, enough so that I almost read the end of the book first just to make sure he lived (I NEVER read the end first, so that fact that I was even considering it as an option was a huge deal).
Yeah, I still think Remus's ending is a mistake and feels very 'added on' (because he was originally meant to survive). I was deeply disappointed because he was the only one of his generation who actually moved forward with his life (unlike Snape, Sirius and Wormtail, who are all still trapped in the past and who all end up dead). I don't think the 'war orphan' idea justifies aborting Remus's arc or killing off Tonks. I've always wondered if the Trio originally ended up with Remus and Tonks after fleeing Malfoy Mansion, instead of Bill and Fleur. As you say, it definitely seems like there was a lot of story with them that JKR just couldn't fit into the book.
