Sunday Sundry: Fandom Secrets Edition

Sep 12, 2021 09:15

I felt like looking at some FandomSecrets. Basically based on PostSecrets - a collection of fandom "secrets", which are usually just semi unpopular opinions or things people don't have anyone else to talk about with. Which I totally get. They send images, but I feel weird copypastaing, so I'm just going to post the transcriptions. Or, if there aren ( Read more... )

I recently finished watching 30 Rock for the first time earlier this year, and am still impressed at how invested I was in Jack and Liz's friendship. Usually I would be shipping a pair like that, but they managed to make it very platonic, lol, while still very sweet and emotionally compelling. I didn't need any ships because there was that central friendship to draw me in.

Aw, yes! I do buy their friendship and enjoy that aspect of the show very much.

I love reading FandomSecrets. It's kind of sad that posts rarely get over a hundred comments these days over there though, because I remember when it used to reach much higher than that. But I like seeing what people are talking about in regards to opinions of either particular fandoms or general fandom at the moment.

I sort of see this one. I'm 50/50 in agreement, I'd say. I actually do enjoy glimpses into YTer's personal lives, but at some point, no, I don't care.Sometimes I do like learning more about a person, but nowadays you kind of have to take what they show you with a grain of salt because oftentimes it's part of their online persona rather than them actually being 100% authentic. And Q&As can be a good place to learn more about a person, I actually like the livestreamed YT videos where they are answering questions from the chat because it's not something that is already chosen before filming but in real time, if that makes sense. I don't always watch those, but there are a few YTers that I do because they are interesting to ( ... )

Did we meet through a FS fandom friending meme? Trying to remember. I used to be active in the comments and the like, but life mandated that I couldn't be around to participate when posts went up. Which TBH I think helped do the community in a little, you really are limited to a time window in order to post. :/ Though mostly it was the trolls, especially in General Comments - last I checked they'd gone away, but damage done, you know ( ... )

I don't know, I can't remember myself. I actually never really went onto F!S on LJ, only on DW (at least, on DW more frequently), but if a friending meme was hosted on there at some point in the past I most likely participated since I participated in almost any fandom friending meme.

I go to fandom secrets every so often and read the secrets. I was really into it back when I was in undergrad.

I think that's when it was the largest.

=Fanfic hit a peak in 2010-2013. That quality is hard to find now.=
=I think you have to keep in mind that it's your personal perspective. How many books or movies have you remembered being in love with, only to revisit and wind up hating?=

Oh, yeah! Your tastes change as you get older.

When I first got into online fandom in 2000, I was enthralled by fanfic. It didn't take long for me to realise a lot of that early fic was actually pretty terrible.

There's also a staggering amount of absolute crap out there. I'm not talking about fic that's not to my taste, but fic that's so badly written it's barely understandable and even some where you wonder if the would-be author has ever even seen a book.

I think with YT's personal lives it's a balance. A little bit builds a rapport and I think keeps fans invested. Too much info starts to shift the focus of the video. If I'm watching your video that's about gardening for sure show your dog or talk about how your family like things but I mostly want the information part of the video not a bunch of filler and then a bit of info.

LOL at "why are you making the characters gay" that's someone's first day on the internet I guess.

Very much agree about the fanfic quality comment. My standards for quality have changed over the years as I've read more. It doesn't mean everything is bad now, it may just not be my cup of tea anymore. I can be picky about what I read but that doesn't mean that I have to call it out for being bad, to someone else it's awesome.

Definitely don't remember being invested in the 30 Rock romance stories. They weren't really the heart of the show.
