Info on the Hamptons, anyone?

I have a couple of friends who will be visiting me who want to take a day and go out to the Hamptons. I've never been and I don't know anything about the Hamptons or how to get there. Can anyone here help? Is it more than one town? Which would be fun to visit, explore, shop, eat, etc. then return the same day? I'm assuming there's train service to
