Despite my criminal procedure professor writing a two-page letter explaining why she marked my final exam improperly, my grade appeal was turned down. Thus I have, now and presumably period, a C+ in criminal procedure, as I have just finished a round of articling applications to firms that primarily deal in criminal law, because it's what I'm best ( Read more... )

I'm confused; if the CP prof knows they marked the exam wrong and presumably thinks you should get a different grade, why can't they just change it?

Because authority doesn't rest with the prof to change the grade.

Law school marks are given anonymously on a curve to prevent favoritism. You can't just go to the prof after an exam and request a grade change; that would defy the entire point of the anonymity in the first place. You have to go to the Grade Appeal Committee, which then deals with your grade.

In my case, the committee felt that mine and my prof's belief (that my exam was marked improperly because I answered two questions in a different, but still correct, way than she had anticipated) was not sufficient to change the grade. (Which is kind of bullshit given that they will bend over backwards to accomodate students with "disabilities." I know at least four students who "discovered" cases of ADD and got to write five-hour exams rather than the usual three.)

Wait, so the Prof feels that *she* marked your exam incorrectly, given your post-exame response?

So the prof didn't know it was your work when it was initially graded?

And there's no available avenue of appeal?

Does the prof feel strongly enough about her mistake to represent you in a civil case?

I can appeal to the school Senate, but there's no point. It won't change anything before the articling application process is over, and that's all that grades matter for.

And no, even if I were so inclined, which I am not.
