Lets say you were told to do something by your boss and this certain something is typical viewed as being evil. But you don't know that to begin with. Do you go through with it especially if your life--er job is on the line? Does that make the person who did it evil or the person who thought it up more evil ( Read more... )

[Thinking so much has gotten Robert a little philosophical.]

... Fascinating question.

"Good" and "evil" are generally arbitrary concepts, because they are defined using categories that are too broad. The more rational method is to think of ethics instead, and to base one's decisions on humanism codes so that one will reduce harm wherever possible and otherwise strive to make sound, logical decisions.

In your thought experiment, the person who conceived the job and told you to do it is the more unethical one. You were incapable of making a sound, rational decision because you did not have the information necessary to do so. Therefore, your actions were not motivated by prior knowledge, and although they were unethical, they were not done out of malicious intent. The boss, in this experiment, had access to this information and therefore had intent, so it is ultimately the boss who is the person who should bear the brunt of the charge.

Not all situations can be judged so easily, though.

I rarely take "vacations", so to speak. I enjoy my work... it gives me something to invest my cognitive functions into. [Robert would honestly be lost if he didn't have something to work on.]

So what was your occupation back on your home planet, then? For you to be bored here, you must have had a very extraordinary life.

You sound like the type not to. Using that fancy lingo and all.

[ This is such a lie. ] Er. Tax collector.

Hrm... many people comment on my particular vernacular, but it honestly is not that uncommon where I am from. It is simply... the most professional manner of discourse.

[Robert cannot tell it's a lie.] Ah, is that so? That is a job that has much stigma behind it... but I am certain you are well-aware of that. Still, tax collection hardly strikes me as a particularly fascinating career... but perhaps it is, for you?

You planning on getting a job here or something? Professional for who?

Woowee it sure does. I could come from an exciting place. Having a boring job just makes everything around me more exciting when you think about it.

I would certainly consider it... perhaps teaching, if Ms. Raine Sage and the others have any need of my services in that regard. But, ah... the professionalism is... just a courtesy for everybody I speak to. [And it's comforting for himself. Hello, artificial distance!]

I suppose that makes some sense... Has Luceti been an environment that is easy for you to adjust to? It... has... admittedly been anything but the sort for me. Though several people here have... made it easier to acclimatize.
