Grr. It annoys me when people say "You can tell they didn't have to work for what they have... but at least they were nice..." ...meaning that not working for what they have means their character is inherently flawed and their value as a person must be made up for by qualities like "nice ( Read more... )

yeah, i've never thought of myself as being someone who flaunts his money, but certain people's idle comments about my possessions since i've lived in olympia have gotten me feeling self-conscious, as if i'm a terrible person for not having "easily replaceable goods". hmm, maybe that's the distinction- i don't view anything i own as easily replaceable, and people who REALLY have money view everything as easily replaceable (unless it's an original van gogh or something).

yes, i miss you too... i fear that i've gotten bitter about people in general, even to those i want to be friends with (but not people i already am friends with). it's like i knew how to be friendly, and somehow i've slowly forgotten. i hate this and i hope it changes soon.

hard "WORK" is highly regarded in our society.

i totally agree, and it isn't just our society. i'm just saying there is no correlation between a person's character and whether they've worked 80 hour weeks.
because hard work is so highly regarded, it seems as if people who look down on wealthy people who don't work much, view them as not motivated, lazy, and spoiled. my mom has hardly worked in her life because she hasn't needed to, but that didn't make her lazy- she was a fulltime mom. now that i've left the house, she's getting more involved in volunteering for causes she cares about. it's no reason for people to get all snooty about it.

i agree with you. never could a persons character be based wholey on the sum of his/hers "work ethic".
the protestant work ethic is an arcane christian idealogy. used to chastize (indirectly) the growing bergouise of the time. just try telling that to the religious zealots & neocrats running our current state of affairs.
...o yeah & ignorance. blame that too.
