The problem with 'Communism' is that it was actually a thinly-veiled dictatorship, both in Russia and China. It works very well on a small scale (kibbutzes in Israel), but on a large scale it's much harder to implement, even when you're doing it right.
on this point i was not ignorant, though i never until now understood why. "thinly veiled" indeed- Lenin's entire manifesto is based on the concept of the "dictatorship of the proletariat". admittedly it was only intended to be the intermediary step to reach the ultimate goal of true equality and freedom under no state ("the state will wither away" he says, but he doesn't say how, and so it never did wither away). the other problem was that stalin corrupted much of what marx and lenin talked about. even lenin knew on his deathbed that this new guy stalin was going to fuck shit up.
