Welcome to the South. -that's all I can say about that.
I used to live Arizona and moved to Missouri for school. Before I moved, I never faced discrimination for being gay or another note, anti-jewish commments.
I now have the pleasure of running into both on a more regular basis.
I don't know if you heard about the Jesse Valencia case (straight cop kills gay college student), but that happened in the town I live in. Google him, you'll read all about it, and the horrible things people said about him. I have had six year olds tell me I am going to hell (I've got a Star of David on my back along with other tattoos, and they noticed it).
Enjoy the South, it's culture can bring out the best and worst of people.
I didn't have a chance to read thoroughly the 70+ posts between you and that other guy ran though. I think I should say, to elaborate mon my previous comment because it was slightly off topic
( ... )
I have to agree that there certainly are a lot of *interesting* people here. However, I might be spoiled a bit living in Charlotte, that I rarely have to deal directly with bigotry and complete moronic behavior about anything else other than the usual big-city problems: Budget crises, school issues, overt/covert racism, Northern influx vs Southern heritage "at risk", etc. A quick trip ten minutes out of the city in either direction seemed to open up an interesting can of "oh shit" worms, though, as people tend to be a little less "enlightened" and very vocal about what they think. And I honestly still cringe a bit when I see the Confed flag flying over or instead of the US flag. But hey, that's SOUTH Carolina mostly, and I don't go there unless I HAVE to ;-)
