i'm taking an audition for the marine band on saxophone and the army band on clarinet

weight standards...

i'm 5'9'' so i should be between 128 and 186

i'm definitely 195

i wonder if that is a huge problem in music? 9 pounds by may? ugh...i should be practicing...not dieting

Might be a tiny problem for the Marine band, because I think (but I'm not sure) that they go pretty strictly by the weight charts. With the Army band, if you're over the weight they measure your bodyfat by measuring your neck and your waist and putting it through a little equation. I'm sure you're fine.

its just really weird, because i'm not a fat person. sure i'm a bit beefy/stocky, but my stomach is rather flat. i just have really solid legs from playing soccer and lifting weights my entire life. i'd like to think a physical examination would show i'm just as in shape, if not more so, than people who make the 186 cutoff.

blah

too bad the army band is clarinet and the marine band is saxophone. if it was flipped i'd feel better since i have a much greater chance of succeeding on saxophone than clarinet.

well...i guess here goes a tiny little weightloss plan. stupid diets. stupid marines. stupid music.

I really wouldn't worry about it too much. For the army, you have to go to a recruiter before you can go to the audition. They'll do the weighing and taping and let you know if you can do the audition. With the marines, if they don't pick you out as horrifically overweight by your picture or seeing you at the audition (there's no recruiter visit before that audition, is there?), then they'll let you know about their limits (and whether or not you meet them) should you get the job.

Wait, uh...after all those months (years?) of your posts about your former job, are you actually going to encourage our poor little Joe into auditioning?

I'm sure every one of the 195 pounds is sexy so they'll let you in ;-)

Seriously, 9 pounds isn't too much to lose in a couple of months. It's only about a pound a week. Erik and I are trying to follow the Atkins diet and I've lost 4.5 pounds in a month.

I like your body too ;-)

I would agree with you that you are not fat. I think you just have a stocky build. You have a pretty flat tummy and you're big in all the right places. If my 180 lbs were distributed like yours, I'd be very happy. Unfortunately I need to weigh closer to 160 or 165 to have your proportions, hence my current push to lose a few lbs.
