I've been having that issue for months now... quite annoying since I tend to forget to check in more than once every few weeks.

I guess you need to check in more often? Or else you have very chatty friends.

More the former. I think the total LJ traffic from friends has gone down due to facebook. I'm kind of burned out on face book though.
