Researching for fic is just as bad as for homework and papers

So I've had it in my mind to add another contribution to last_battle_au. The end result of that was " When one door shuts, a window opens". Friends of Narnia in Cold War Germany, set somewhat in rthstewart's TSG AU world.

(I also just updated the entry with some revisions; it's a little longer now, with a bit more detail and less choppy than the original posting.)

Anyway, here be links and footnotes for those that are interested (and a reminder for me since I didn't include the details in the actual story).

* Edmund and Eustace are meeting at the Mommsen-Eck in West Berlin. It was founded in 1905 and still exists today.

* The three Western Allies that administered West Berlin each had their own armies occupying the city. The American forces were known as the Berlin Brigade. The British had the Berlin Infantry Brigade, and the French forces were called Forces Françaises à Berlin. You can learn more here and here. They occupied West Berlin throughout the Cold War.

* The border between East and West Berlin was closed at midnight on August 13, 1961. Here's a photo of East German paramilitary workers literally keeping the border shut as they prepared for the wall to go up.

* You can read all about Jane Goodall here. I think she's about a year or two younger than Eustace and Jill.

* Wiki has some lovely photos of the Ishtar Gate. And here's one of a Lion from the Processional Way. (And since it's at the Met, I must go take a look at it in person one of these days.)
