I think the problem is ratings--period. I don't think you can rate fics like that, and to rate is often cruel or vindictive. As you say, most just automatically rate at 5 stars--so less stands out. And when I see one or zero stars, what I'm seeing is (an often undeserved) flame. I think in terms of guiding other readers, you're better off with recs in places like WIKTT and rec sites--or even often even number of reviews is some guide as to what is of interest. And when it comes to giving the author feedback--well, actually feedback is a lot more effective--and can be kinder.
It's wierd. I got a "squeeee!, awsome, more!" review on OWL, but only 3.5 little owls. I think this corrosponds with about 7/10 - which is probably about right for the story, but doesn't match the reviewer's words. However, others seem to give full marks as a matter of course. I'm terrible for this - partly because I leave reviews when I like something and not when I don't, but also because if you even give 9/10 on Ashwinder, they only get 4 stars and when you're the first reviewer, that can reduce the number of people who read it.
I think there should be a guide - what mark to give depending on how much you like it. I also think that Ashwinder should sort out their little stars!
