What the fire department said was somehow with the wind, embers got out and hit the wood, starting the wood on fire outside. Something she was burning got up there.

At least that's the story I got this morning.

Beats me.

And I agree with you on the fireplace/chimney thing - I tell my mom every year, and she doesn't listen.

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but unfortunately, most "bad stuff" that parents are trying to protect their children from happen with people the children know and trust. So, not fearing strangers because you knew everyone is sort of counter-intuitive.

Again, don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but them's the facts. I totally agree, though, that neighbors in general should be more neighborly. Sad face. :(

Yes and no.

I don't think keeping kids in a bubble is a good thing. I think that a lot of times parents are over protecting their kids.

There's a fine line between protecting and overprotecting and right now, I believe a lot of people are doing the latter. Mostly because of the 24-7 fear news that's always on.

I've looked at numbers, and it's not worse than it was when I was a kid, it's just that it's constantly bombarding parents about it. And of course, if a parent dares to allow their kid to walk to the school bus alone before they are 13 or 14, they get called a bad person.

It's not entirely true--some neighborhoods are very tight and have block parties and such. And some people still let their kids have lots of free time. Ironically, from what I've seen, the former group tends to be more educated and wealthy, whereas the latter tend to be the working class folks who can't afford all the childcare and activities that the former have. We live in the middle of both worlds--and I took both kids trick-or-treating this year (even tho the baby screamed most of the time and it was freezing).
