summary : A mother's love and a mother's instincts.
Mikoto felt her heart clench as she watched her firstborn. At moments like this, she cold only whish she had contested the arranged marriage into the main family as ninjas of their clan were allowed to. But here she stood, hidden in the shadows as she watched her son murder his cousin. Her instincts warred within her; the mother wanting to protect her child and her ex-ANBU side wanted to arrest him. She stayed silent and hidden and waited to see what her son did. When the mad frenzy ended, she watched the glaze in his eyes clear and shocked horror rise in his eyes when he saw the body lying, drifting half in the river. His hands clenched and his eyes closed; deep shuttered breaths wracked his body as he tried to calm himself. Her firstborn turned to leave, a final look over his shoulder at his favorite cousin showed glittering tears. His mouth moved, "I'm sorry Shisui. He's taken it too far and…and I was too weak." He left, disappearing deeper into the forest.
Uchiha Mikoto watched her firstborn leave, as his soul was torn apart once more. She wondered at how many pieces were left. She too left the scene when Itachi disappeared fro her senses. She wondered at how many more childhoods the ninja life would take.
Uchiha Mikoto turned away and remembered her once innocent firstborn son who once smiled and laughed at fluttery butterflies. She wondered at what point her angel had fallen into the dark world they all end up living in. And she cried the tears that he would never know to shed.

Very first time I've ever written from Mikoto's POV. We don't really know much about her (or if there is some info, I've never seen it), so I took some liberties. Hope you enjoyed it.
