Silence

It’s quiet in the lab. Adam likes this time best, when most of the day shifts have ended and almost everyone has gone home. There’s a sort of sanctity to the lab at night, a kind of easy stillness that makes Adam feel like he can finally take a deep breath. He focuses better without people around-it’s the truth. Not that he doesn’t love the team, but the fact of the matter is that he has no social skills. He’s awkward. Which is okay, but to be honest it’s just easier when it’s just him-him and his computers.

Except it’s not just him. The door opens, just enough, and Mac enters the lab quietly, pulling on a long-sleeved lab coat. Adam nods at him and returns to his microscope. He feels rather than sees Mac’s understanding. This isn’t Adam’s job right now. He’s not here because he has to be, or because he needs the overtime. He’s here because Adam lives this lab, needs it with every breath. And he knows Mac understands, because Mac’s the same way. Mac needs the silence, too.

Out of the corner of his eye, Adam sees Mac pull up a microscope and settle in, the quiet scrape of the stool echoing across the lab.

Neither one breaks the silence.
