Dude, now that is sick.

I don't get some people. And I don't get people who think that they can read God's mind.

Man. Ever feel like our society takes three steps forward only to take a dozen backwards?

I wish I could think of something to do, but the only thing I can think of is to try and make it more public. Try to get in touch with News stations or Oprah or something that gets it out there so that it gets exposed before it can really take off.

But even that's kind of risky too, I suppose.

But man. *shakes head* People like that just give God and Christianity a bad name.

This whole thing really threw me for a loop, and the cynic in me says that it probably shouldn't have.

I'm constantly amazed at the hate that people spew; especially when they do it in the name of God.

Thank you so much!

Unfortunately it seems we don't have any ordinances about erecting monuments, at least, according to the paper, but I think I'll look into it some more on my own.

I think I'm going to have a very busy day.

Well, one thing an organization in my town did when they were being picketed by the Phelps people was to hold a fundraiser. They got people to pledge a certain amount of money per hour they were picketed. They raised several thousand dollars. I don't know if your high school's Gay/Straight Alliance does fundraising, but maybe there's another gay-friendly organization that could benefit in this way. I like that because it actually puts the Phelps people to work for the very thing they're protesting.

As far as the monument, I'd think the ACLU would get on it because of the quote from the Bible infringing on the separation of church and state. It seems that that would override the fact that your town has no regulations about this (and hopefully this will spur them to pass some). You could contact your local chapter and find out what they think.

Good luck. This is a terrible thing to see happening in your town, and I admire you for working against it.

That is an absolutely brilliant idea.

I did contact the local ACLU, and hopefully I'll hear back from them soon. I'm also contacting all of the local gay and lesbian groups that I can. More than likely they will be trying to do something about this situation and then I can lend them a hand.

I'm always astounded at the level of hate that exists in the world. I really hope we can stop them.

Unfuckingbelievable!
Are his parents freaking out? I dont remember this happening, but I was in Florida at that time. Is there a national GLBT association you can contact to come out and protest?
I am just disgusted. Religious zealots...they're all freaks. They forget those bible verses that say: Thou shalt not judge, lest ye be judged.
Talk about people who live in glass houses...you need to find some dirt on Phelps and print it.

bastards.

Thank you! I've been trying to find all the different local resources I can find. I want to see also if any of these groups have already started working on what can be done about it.

It made the front page of the Daily news if you can believe that.

OMG...that's incredible. For the LDN to get involved. That's a real statement.
I think it's sick...he entered hell?? What a horrendous thing to say about someone. Who on this earth has the right to call someone else an abomination??

It made the front page and lead headline, but the LDN was hardly complimentary about Rev. Phelps, thank god.

Whatever help you need, let me know, I'll be there; I'd really like to help counterprotest or liaison with groups, whatever you need. You can reach me at the Chamber of Commerce main number - I almost always answer the phone and I'm there 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
