Will and Jem sat in the chairs that occupied the space in front of the large fireplace in the library of the London Institute. Will held a book open in his lap, one leg thrown over the arm of the chair. Jem sat across from him, his silver eyes staring into the flames. Will had not read a word in over an hour, his mind constantly going to the attack Jem had had earlier in the day. He cast his eyes over at his friend, the fire casting shadows over Jem’s face, highlighting the worry lines that had formed between his drawn brows.
“Jem,” Will said quietly.
“Yes William?”
“Play for me.”
Jem met Will’s blue eyes and Will gave him a small smile, nodding to the violin and bow that sat propped against the chair. Jem returned the smile and nodded. He reached down, his fingers curling around the instrument and the bow. Slowly he rose to his feet, standing in front of the fireplace with his back to the fire and his eyes on Will. Positioning the violin against his neck, Jem raised the bow, resting it against the strings. With a soft sigh he started to play.
