My school is lacking in nerds, alas.

So today the law school had a costume contest, and apparently some of my friends dressed up -- not all of them, but some. And one of them was a classmate who dressed up as Captain Hammer. I recognized him immediately -- I mean, duh -- but he was so thrilled to find someone else who knew who the hell he was. He said as much, and I said, "Well, duh. ( Read more... )

He looks totally Hammeresque. It works.

Nobody at my law school would have done that in a million years! I have one friend who, after we had been close for two years, mentioned liking Firefly while super-wasted. LIKE IT WAS A DEEP DARK SECRET. Nerdery was just taboo. Like if you don't talk about it, NOBODY WILL KNOW you sit around arguing arcane property issues over drinks on Saturday nights.

At my school, everyone's willing to claim the title of 'nerd' (i.e., someone who argues arcane property issues over drinks on Saturday nights) but doesn't seem to be what I would recognize as a 'nerd'; i.e., someone who has a passing acquaintance with science-fiction media.

Then again, JS/study partner is the biggest Trekkie I've ever met in my entire life (no seriously) but he'd never seen Dr. Horrible and therefore didn't recognize Capt. Hammer, so maybe I'm the weird one, being a Trekkie and a Nathan Fillion fangirl Dr. Horrible-having-watched-er and a property-issue-arguer all in one.

I don't know. If I was wearing a Capt. Hammer costume (I wouldn't...it would be Dr. Horrible all the way), I might look at you funny for shouting "KHAAAANN!"

It's an odd franchise crossover. That would be what would prompt my quizzical look--not any lack of geek creds.

I usually assign the term nerd to scholastics anyway.
