Canon ships, actually super intelligent!Thor with a language barrier anonymous April 10 2013, 18:21:06 UTC
After everyone moves into the Avengers Tower, Thor makes an offhand comment that he was never as smart as Loki. This leads the others to believe that Thor must be kind of slow- not because Thor is, but because how smart could Loki be, really?

Really smart.

Really friggen smart.

And Thor being "less intelligent" then Loki? Means he's actually super smart, compared to the Midgardians, anyway.

If only it wasn't for that pesky language barrier (every time he tries to explain it properly, Allspeak translates it into "wibbly wobby balls of stuff"), the fact that Midgardians literally cannot perceive the world the same way as Asgardians can (Asgardians see more of the color spectrum, can see the way the universe is woven together I'm sorry I mean string theory), etc.

Crack? :D

tl;dr Thor, compared to Loki, isn't that smart. Thor, compared to Midgardians, is actually a friggen supergenius. Except it's hard for him to communicate properly with people, especially when Allspeak is translating his words into Midgardian and no that's ( ... )

Finally, one day, Tony gets it.

He’s listening idly to Bruce attempting to explain string theory to Thor and Steve. Steve’s just sitting there with that furrow in the middle of his brow that means he’s trying really hard, and Thor’s frowning too, but it’s a different sort of frown, one Tony can’t place. He asks questions, and so does Steve, but Thor’s are less ‘huh?’ and more ‘please rephrase that so I may understand it better.’

And that’s when Tony realizes Thor already knows about string theory.

Now, okay, Jane Foster is his girlfriend, that’s not too hard to believe, but he doesn’t talk like someone who has already been acquainted with an Earth theory and is hearing it again. He sounds more like someone who is being presented with a concept he’s already familiar with in vastly different terms.

Tony’s had that problem once. Yinsen’s English was very good, but occasionally Tony would say something and Yinsen would give him that little half smile and tell Stark to say it again in a different way, as though used to navigating silly ( ... )

I can't actually remember if I'm the OP or not, sorry! But this is lovely! I love the weaving/string theory parallels, and I loved this line: He asks questions, and so does Steve, but Thor’s are less ‘huh?’ and more ‘please rephrase that so I may understand it better.’ I also really liked that Steve was doing his best to learn as well. Yay for learning!

Whether you're the OP or not, I'm glad you liked! People tend to lump Thor and Steve together in the know-nothing category, but even Steve isn't stupid, he just hasn't been exposed to a lot of ideas yet and I see him even pre-serum, but especially afterward, as being a bit of a sponge when it comes to learning new things. After all, "the list" was a fanon idea that ended up being canon, so clearly Steve wants to learn about anything and everything, and I bet that includes string theory. In fact, his confusion has more to do with Bruce being too technical than some inability to understand. String theory isn't that hard to grasp the gist of, but if you insist on being accurate over simplifying, as I'd be willing to bet Bruce is, it'd be hard for anyone to understand.

Haha, wow, I don't know where that word dump came from, but thank you for reviewing!

Right? I feel like, if Steve went to college, he'd be pretty good at whatever he was learning, it's just that he's never had a lot of chances. And yeah, I can totally see Bruce being very technical, especially if it was something he was passionate about explaining, but also unintentionally obfuscating what he was trying to say.

You're welcome. :)
