Tony Stark/Steve Rogers + Bruce Banner [Science bro to the rescue!] anonymous May 8 2012, 20:23:00 UTC
The movie has proved that Tony and Bruce become science bffs. So, the Avengers start to live together and there is another "take that away, what are you?" fiasco that cuts Tony to the core.

Bruce tells Steve off in his own version of the "Hurt him and I'll break your legs. Then the Hulk will sit on them" speech.

Okay, I just want to see Bruce fighting for his BFF. Tony/Steve UST/slash encouraged but not necessary.

Bruce himself was stunned by the viciousness of the retort. Tony was silent, dark eyes seething. He turned away from Steve without a word and walked towards the hallway. As he passed Bruce, Bruce could almost see him replaying Steve’s words again, that genius brain of his picking it apart, scrutinizing it for truth, holding it up against his past, the things he’d done. There was no lack of anger in his eyes, but beneath it there was a sort of guilty recognition. Bruce had a horrible feeling that Tony wasn’t leaving the argument just to spite Steve, but because he honestly didn’t think he could argue with what had been said. To Tony, it might as well have been true. Just a glance at Stark Industries’ stock market report from a few years ago was all the evidence he needed; if there was one thing the Stark family was good at, it was creating weapons, perfecting death in a laboratory ( ... )

Bruce knew Tony wouldn’t be sleeping, not after what happened. Instead, he went down to the lab, where he could hear the telltale sounds of whirring machines and scraping metal. He found Tony in the midst of removing the upgrade from his suit, stripping away metal and wires with movements that were a bit too forceful, even for him.

“What’d you tell Steve?” Tony asked, not even looking up from the suit.

“What?”

“Well, you were talking to him.” Tony shrugged, “After my little chat with him, I figured it was probably about me.” He tore out a tangle of wires that really should probably have been handled by a machine, before he finally glanced over his shoulder, “He didn’t send you to talk to me, did he?”

Bruce realized that Tony must have suspected that Bruce actually agreed with what Steve had said about him. “No. I just cleared some things up about the upgrade. Told him it wasn’t your fault it misfired in the field ( ... )

I've read this like twice and Steve's "maybe you're just too good at it" made me ache for Tony both times. Just, oh man, Steve! Why ya gotta be such an asshole?
Also, your Bruce is awesome. :D

So glad to see this was filled, and done so perfectly! Definitely IC. Props for letting it be noted that Steve had good intentions, despite getting ahead of himself by saying things that would hurt the most. Double props for gifting Bruce with the smooth tongue to put him in his place!
