Why, specifically, does Darcy go around armed with a taser, and why doesn't she hesitate to use it?

The first assumption was always that she had survived an attack, that she was raped or mugged and the taser was self defense. The next assumption was a family member or cousin or friend got attacked. She's also heard abusive relationship, paranoia, fear, and hell, after the Avengers went public a friend asked if it was because she always knew there were aliens.

She stopped answering them with words, letting her eyebrows tell them whatever they wanted to interpret.

It wasn't really a secret, but it was an extremely personal.

Every day growing up teachers, the TV, the internet, books - everywhere she looked she was told there was a 25% chance she would be raped. She could remember sitting in third grade and the teacher asking every third girl to stand up. Could remember the teacher stating 1 in 3 girls would be attacked in some way by the time they left college. That half of those would probably face multiple attacks.

OP here! Oh my gooodddd YES. This is PERFECT! I love it, love it, love it. I was mostly expecting ideas or fills ezactly like people threw at Darcy in yours, but this is supremely awesome, and really, really hits home. This is the exact reason (among others) that I own multiple knives and stahs them around my living space, have memorized escape routes in my home and work, identified objects in my routine surroundings that could be used as impromptu weapons, and am always careful to be aware of my surroundings and conscious of everyone around me in any unsecured spaces.

This is wonderful, because it's just so, so true. And so very darcy, too. Bless you!

I'm not going to lie, those assumptions are the entire reason I filled this prompt. My biggest problem with comics is the fact most female heros only become such due to getting raped (or they get raped during one of their important storylines). :\ It really bugs me that in the mind of writers, there is no other reason for a female to learn to fight/self-defense. I didn't want Darcy to be filed away like that.

My first thought reading the prompt was 'oh god, I don't want to see Darcy raped.' Then I realized she didn't have to be and the idea hit.

I love Darcy so very much. She's snarky and confident. I wanted to show that despite what we're told, women have more options than to just sit back and let it happen. So, my answer. Darcy is my own superhero. ♥
