I'm not a huge Batman fan, but Bane is a great villain. He knows how to hurt people from the inside out.
So he tortures them in front of each other. Taunts them, humiliates them, lets them see via newspapers or radio reports how the villains are taking over New York without the Avengers there to stop them.
And then, one by one, he starts to break them. Clint and Natasha first. Because they've been trained for this, and if they crack, the rest will crumble.
The one thing he didn't count on? Thor. Who had been in Asgard, and returned to find the city in chaos. Thor, who is physically matched and can take this mortal on. Thor, who is fucking pissed by what he's found here.
The rest, dear anon, is up to you.

"You told him to...you made him...you got him at..." the Captain spluttered. His body shook, but his blue eyes were steely.
"I gave him a decision," Bane said. "He made it."
Horror crept into the Captain's eyes and he blinked back tears. Another "I'm sorry" fell out of his mouth. Bane had never met anyone who'd meant those words before. It was a pitiful sight. So Bane picked him coat up off the floor, pulled the arc reactor out of the pocket.
"Take this as a token of my apologies," Bane said as he thrust the reactor into the Captain's hand.
Captain America saw the reactor glowing blue in his palm, but did not respond. No screams, no tears, just quiet trembling. Bane thought that suited a quietly righteous man. He nodded curtly and left.

Wow, I really wasn't expecting anybody to fill this. It's so good! Really well-written, all the aaaangst (I began to wonder what I'd wished for when I was reading about my poor bb Clint) and the dialogue was spot on and intelligent. I hope each respective baby-venger is found alive, but I do actually kind of like how it's not mentioned either. It adds to the tone.
I'm so glad you did this, thank you so much!

Yeah, this is definitely the darkest thing I've ever written (so far). I think all of the Avengers are alive at the end, but Tony is dangerously close to the edge.
You're welcome! This was a blast to fill!

...will Bruce ever come back? *wibbles*

I'd like to think Bruce comes back, but I prefer to leave that up to the reader.
