I would say that if you wore a long sleeve dress shirt, slacks and casual dress shoes you would be fine. A blazer or other similar jacket would be a great touch but not a necessity. Also NO khakis!
You're better to be overdressed than you are underdressed. I'd wear a smart dress shirt with a vest and necktie. Black pants. (If you must have colour, tweed would be acceptable provided it matched the jacket.) Dress. Shoes. No sneakers.
I wear a really nice dress shirt, with a silk tie, nice pants, and occasionally I'll wear a jacket, or my glasses. But I always wear sneakers. When I'm at work, I like to be 90% business and 10% pleasure, if ya know what I mean~
It sounds like you should model your attire after a college professor. Patches on the sleeves, light sweater, etc. Hence the "smart" reference, old chum.
