Character
Name: Kyon
Series: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Timeline: Post Disappearance
Canon Resource Links: Wikia article
Wikipedia article
Affiliation: Trainer

Personality:

Compared to everyone around him, Kyon is normal. He has pretty average grades, normal friends, and just an all-around normal life. For a long time, he believed that any sort of supernatural beings like time travelers or aliens were not real. However, when he met Haruhi, he ended up meeting several others who ended up being the type of people that he believed were imaginary. Even though Kyon has trouble believing and is very skeptical about what the other Brigade members tell him about their abnormalities at first, he comes to accept it as they provide him proof. His intelligence is shown through his understanding of the complicated concepts they tell him about and by the fact that he won’t believe them without proof.

Kyon is very snarky and quick-witted. When someone says something strange, Kyon is quick to tell them that what they said was, indeed, strange. He’s also very level-headed, unlike the other members of the SOS Brigade. He knows when one of Haruhi’s ideas is stupid, and he’s not afraid to tell her, even if she won’t listen to him.

As sarcastic as he is, Kyon still cares about his friends and he’s willing to go as far as blackmailing the Integrated Data Sentient Entity to protect them. When Yuki is threatened with deletion by the Integrated Data Sentient Entity, Kyon states that he won’t hesitate to tell Haruhi about her powers and use them to get her back. Kyon will also stand up against Haruhi, who is very difficult to go against since she refuses to believe what most people will tell her, even if they tell her that what she’s doing is wrong. However, when Haruhi takes her teasing of Mikuru too far, Kyon disregards that fact about Haruhi and stands up to her, telling her that what she was doing was wrong.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:
+Kyon’s very level-headed and he knows when an idea of Haruhi’s is stupid or dangerous, while the rest of the Brigade members just go along with it.
+He’s the only one that Haruhi will listen to.
+He’s quick witted.
+Kyon isn’t afraid to stand up for a friend.

Weaknesses:
-Kyon is very limited in what he can do; he’s always walking on eggshells. If he does something wrong, Haruhi will create closed space. So, Kyon has to be careful about what he does and how it will affect her.
-He’s the group’s pack mule. Kyon lets himself get pushed around by Haruhi, which ends up with him buying all of their supplies and paying for their meals.
-Kyon’s not very resourceful. He relies on other people’s advice on what to do when he’s put in strange situations.

First Person Sample:

[The gear clicks on, and Kyon taps it to make sure it’s working.] If I’m right about all of this, I’m now a pokémon trainer. [He looks to the side and mumbles to himself.] This is just like the games, isn’t it? Well, except I have an Electric.

[Kyon turns back to the camera and gives it an appraising look.] Anyway, I’d like to know if anyone out there has met someone by the name of Haruhi Suzumiya. You really can’t miss her. Ah, also, please tell me if you’ve run across people named Mikuru Asahina, Yuki Nagato, and Itsuki Koizumi.

[Suddenly, Kyon’s gear is taken from his hands and the camera is obscured by the face of a Pichu.] Oh, that’s right. This is my starter. I don’t know what to call her yet, but I’ll think of a name eventually. I’m open to suggestions. [His hand reaches for the gear, but he gets shocked by the Pichu and he withdraws his hand.]

… I’ll really need to get used to this.

Third Person Sample:

Kyon knew he wasn’t in his own home when he woke up, especially since he woke without the aid of his sister. He was then subsequently shoved out of the house by a strange woman that called herself his mother. When he was outside, Kyon sighed. Either this was a really strange dream or Haruhi had something to do with this. With everything that had been going on lately, Kyon wasn’t even sure which one it would be. If this happened to not be a dream, all Kyon could hope for was that it wasn’t like the alternate world he was in only a little while ago.

Kyon decided that he would look for Haruhi (he need to make sure that this wasn’t another alternate reality), but that could wait until after he got settled in. Still, he didn’t like the unsettling feeling in the pit of his stomach that wouldn’t go away until he knew everyone was here. However, that would have to wait. First things first, he needed to get his starter. Kyon wracked his brain for a few seconds, trying to remember what the starters were. If he could remember correctly, they were Grass, Fire, and Water.

So, with that in mind, Kyon was expecting anything but a Pichu. All he could do when he released it from the pokéball and first laid eyes on it was stare. Wasn’t it supposed to be a Water type or something like that? A Pichu was definitely not one. So what was he doing with an Electric type? That adds another tally to the ‘this is a dream’ column, he thought. Unless Haruhi wished for him to have a Pichu. Kyon outwardly sighed. Why did he have to ruin his newly found comfort with that thought?

He took the gear out of his pocket as the Pichu eyed him curiously. He might as well make use this to see if he can find Haruhi or any of the Brigade members.
