I now know what it means to smile from river to river.

surrealpenguin and she_roars were here this weekend.  The highlights: multiple loops at the Prospect Park traffic circle, brunch at the Williamsburgh Cafe (challah French toast with blackberries), and a Jewish dance party in Bushwick.  While wearing a pencil skirt and chignon, I run into an acquaintance from college ( Read more... )

I would like to get your thoughts on Love in the Times of Cholera. I have had a difficult time getting through it. Of course I am reading it in Spanish, but it is not due to the language. It is just a story that seems to drag that I cannot piece together for some reason and seems so unlike Garcia Marquez's works that I have read before. But then, who am I to criticize? What are you opinions?

I actually felt the same way about the book that you did. I literally flew through other Marquez books, but this one took me weeks to finish because I kept getting bored. Each girl who Fiorentino hooks up with seems interesting as a character in her own right- like the one whose husband stole all the furniture out of the house, or the young cousin there to study- but then she disappears whenever something interesting happens. And you never see any proof as to why he's so in love with Fermina Daza in the first place. Apparently, this is supposed to be a version of Garcia Marquez's own grandparents' love story. It's funny, because along with One Hundred Years of Solitude, this book is his most famous and talked about, but I didn't enjoy it. News of a Kidnapping was so bad I couldn't finish it, but that was his attempt at journalism/nonfiction.

Organics shampoo and, on special occasions, this L'oreal styling wax. The one in the round white thing with red and yellow letters.

Love in Times of Cholera sounds very strange to me. Maybe it's because I like diseases and I don't really associate love with cholera.

I think of summer as red in general. I say this because my hair takes on certain shades of red in the summer time... and as you know it's almost black! Very odd. :D
