I'd pick K&R. It would almost certainly ruin my chances at the speed-dating event, but hey; can't deny who I am...

I like that choice! It's honest, tells something about yourself, and doesn't get too abstract about it.

Calvin & Hobbes! haha. Either that or a copy of something by Ben Bova, this ridiculously good scifi author.
My wince-inducing book would be my anthology of Japanese death poems. Everybody else at a speed-dating event would probably find it pretty morbid. (I don't.)
