When I was looking into embroidery machines I found myself lusting after the Brother machines and less so after the Viking ones. This was borne out by reviews I read online, but I ended up with a cheaper Janome one eventually because of lack of cash.
Personally I would go for the Viking one because of the endless hoop option. Mine doesn't have that and it's something I've kept thinking I would like as like you I do a lot of embellishing of the edges of garments, etc. My conventional sewing machine will do that, of course, so it's not too great a loss, but custom edgings would be awesome.
I'm rambling a bit. Honestly, I reckon as long as your software (and dear gods that stuff is expensive) is compatible with the machine, it doesn't make too much difference, they all draw pictures with thread.
I have just got back from holiday so sorry to be late. I have only had experience of a brother embroidery machine - one that only embroiders and doesn't do anything else. I think I would be inclined to go with the Viking simply for the endless hoop, so useful. Which ever one does the custom stitches would be good too I'm not really much use am I? If you can't decided then toss a coin heads brother tails viking. if it comes down heads and your reaction is to think oh no, then go for the viking. If you think yes! then go for the brother. but do try to be spontaneous
The brother has an endless hoop too (just got to find one second hand) £150 new (for a hoop!!?) even if it comes with some patterns.
My current machine only embroiders and doesn't stitch any more. I was quoted £360 for a replacement circuit board. Having said that I'm happier that its the sewing part and not the embroidery part that broke. Its cheaper to get a replacement sewing machine than an embroidery one, (my replacement sewing machine was a 99p singer on ebay).
