What OS is this for? If it's XP, have you tried Windows Movie Maker? A couple friends of mine put together a school project using just that, and while it's not that robust, it did the job well.

Oh, and it's a free thing from Microsoft; you should have it as part of a Service Pack upgrade or something.

I haven't used Virtualdub in forever:

but it used to work very well for jumping stuff from codec to codec when I was tinkering around with ripping DVDs to DivX.
and this guy has a tutorial for using it to stitch AVIs together:
