What OS is this for? If it's XP, have you tried Windows Movie Maker? A couple friends of mine put together a school project using just that, and while it's not that robust, it did the job well.
but it used to work very well for jumping stuff from codec to codec when I was tinkering around with ripping DVDs to DivX. and this guy has a tutorial for using it to stitch AVIs together:
