Well. My life's been full of suck lately, but I haven't felt like actually chronicling most of it. Most of the people in the channel have probably heard some of it, but to sum up from where we left off:

If you just need a cheap basic phone service, have you considered a SkypeOut account? Its like $3 a month and you can get a local number for $30 a year.

Vonage can go as low as $15/month with all of the bells and whistles, but "only" 500 minutes each month. For your needs, even THAT sounds excessive.

I say go for it, and if so, let them know I sent you, I could use the referral kickback.

By law, phone companies can't make you get the whole bundle, but they're never eager to tell you that. I'm surprised that the person you talked to at Verizon actually fessed up. When setting up DSL with AT&T, I had to be a bit forceful with the guy in stating that I didn't have to get phone service, to which he responded, "Oh, ok. Here's what to do..."
