Oooh. *Evil* Ron. Albeit evil-in-a-small-way. If Ron defenders whinge about his treatment you should point out that a boy who had to have a manual to woo his girl - "Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches" - and prompt him to tender painfully artificial compliments and such might easily take even worse advice from peers on how to 'charm' his witch.
(Dunno if you knew about the book - it's in the-seventh-novel-that-thou-hast-not-read - but I think that fits nicely in explaining how an overall 'good' wizard like Ron could still be led to think that a mild date-rape drug is okay.)
Don't know if this is a Harry-to-the-rescue story but it does seem like things will be set up to provide a clear contrast to Hermione of the calibre of her two best friends. Goodie!
