Osen

A while back koko gave me episodes 7 and 8 of Osen. then the drive that it was in kind of dies, but I revived it and  was happy to see all the data still there.

'Osen' is about the lives of the staff of a traditional Japanese restaurant, managed by a young girl-Osen. I suppose it either starts with apprentice Yocchan Ezaki (Yocchan! hahaha!) arriving or when Osen inherits the place, but its kind of amazing. And the food looks so good! I've only seen the two episodes I have, but its cool. especially the food bits, I love how the Japanese appreciate it, especially at Isshouan (the restaurant). They make their own EVERYTHING its kind of rad to watch. In episode 7, when Tome (the sou chef) quit, I was all NO! YOU CAN'T! despite only just being introduced to the character. its a very light drama with a few stereotype characters (Yocchan is the manga-dimensional type, but he tones it down to keep in step with the feel of the drama)  but tugs at you all the same.

but the opening song is what really gets me. "Odore" by Micro. Its gorgeous and I want it! the vocals are just the kind of raspy I like and the arrangement is adorable. and the chorus break! the sudden call "ODORE!". he doesn't sound typically Japanese, so I'm guessing he's either half or not. the closing is by tacky and tsubasa though hahaha what a contrast.

episode 8: Their rice cooked using straw went on a blog and became popular. Due to the unusually high order of rice, the straw supply ran out. BUT THE FESTIVAL IS TOMORROW! and no straw?! but how will they cook the 600 riceballs to feed all the people??! Osen is at a loss. She's sent Kenta out with the neighbour on the neighbour's truck to get straw in Niigita, but its already near 6pm and they've called to say the truck broke down! Osen runs outside, the soundtrack is a tinkling simplistic piano, hopeless desperation seeping into the scene. Sei, the head chef, runs out after her.

Osen: Sei-san, is the roof made of straw?
Sei: yes..its a thatched roof..
Osen: ..can we use this instead?
Sei: ...Osen-san..its not a good idea to burn the roof.

Man, I love this kind of humor XD Osen is younger than almost everyone (I suppose she, Tome and Yocchan are about the same age) and she really looks up to Sei, the father figure. and the chemistry between the characters is awesome. like they're a family. Episode 8 is especially touching. Osen was so determined to hold on to their identity, even if its something as trivial as switching to using wood instead of straw. It like all those whacked out manga adaptations but with a straight face lol. definitely hunting down the other eps and downloading this!
