I always thought sleeping with my katana next to my bed was a sign of my paranoia getting out of hand; that's really fucked up and makes me want to go resharpen mine. Hopefully them bars will get installed soon.

Shotguns have several advantages when used for home defense. As mentioned in another comment, Pump-action or Semi-autos do make a loud sound when being cocked. (years ago, someone was trying to break into a neighbors car. The sound of my racking a shell home in my 12 gauge pump caused the guy to drop all his tools and run. Problem solved AND I didn't have to be a force of Evolution.) Next, shot does not have the penetrating power of the large and medium caliber handguns, so you are less likely to hit a neighbor through a wall. Depending on the size of shot used, you will have anywhere from 9 to a couple of hundred pellets coming out of the muzzle when you fire. Beats the hell out of a single bullet no matter how much you practice. Lastly, I've heard it said that nothing scares an intruder more than seeing a shotgun in the hands of a women. But, before getting a shotgun, you need to REALLY ask yourself "will I pull the trigger if needed?" I lucked out in my encounter and didn't have to kill someone. But I was ready to. If you pull out
