Another semester is almost over!  As per usual, I've put everything off until the last minute, just like I've done with little exception for my entire academic career.  I'm still not quite sure what it is about my habits now that allow me to get good grades: it seems like I've always been the same kind of student, doing the bare minimum at the last ( Read more... )

I'm glad you finally posted something :) Actually, I had a dream last night that Nic posted in his livejournal and was complaining about how annoying Kansas is for passing its new explicit marriage amendment ( ... )

I can definitely relate to what you're saying about film analysis, it was always really difficult for me to distance myself from the plot and characters and focus on the use of cinematic techniques as well. I found that the only way I could seem to do it reasonably well was to watch a movie twice, once to appreciate the plot/acting/etc. and then again to try and focus on how the camera was used. As for Donald Richie's interpretations versus yours, if you disagree with something he sees, then you should definitely go with your interpretation I think, provided you can give good evidence and reasoning for it. The great thing about film and literary analysis is that these things are all highly subjective. Maybe I'll update my journal again too one of these days...

I'd like to read your paper whenever you finish it :)

Perhaps I'll make it available, but please don't be too harsh. I'm rushing it and I suck at papers and blam.

In terms of saying how I feel, I'm a bit too intimidated by my teacher's credentials to consider doing that. She has a Ph.D. from Princeton University and is teaching a 300-level course. And she said before that we should be hesitant to quote online sources because a lot of them are just "any person's opinion." Doesn't really speak much for subjectivity, and I don't have enough faith in my analytical ability to try to judge these things myself.

Hehe, I never meant I intended to critique it, I'd just like to read it because things like Kurosawa and Humanism interest me. Though if you'd like me to edit it, I'd certainly be willing to offer suggestions.

As for using your own opinions, I guess just do whatever you feel most comfortable with, although I don't think a Ph.D. really does anything to make your opinion more valid than someone else's in this case.

Good luck!

Well, that in combination with the subjectivity tidbit I offered are enough to make me wary of how much I extract from my own imagination. It's one thing to have a valid opinion and quite another to expect a teacher very versed in cinematic technique to acknowledge your opinion as such.
