And here's the rest...

Hermione was jerked awake by a noise that broke through her tiredness, tugging her out of sleep.

What-where was-she was instantaneously fully alert at the realization that she couldn’t see Harry.

She sat up and grabbed her wand in one smooth movement, glancing first outside to the mouth of the cave to see that it was still dark and still pouring ( Read more... )

Awesome story. I loved the changes you made to the boggarts. Great job! This story is a lot more believable than most of DH.

This is beautiful in so many ways. Like you, I can't believe that someone's boggart would remain static - it seems only sensible that it would change as the person changed. Given the point Harry and Hermione have reached in your story - on the Horcrux hunt, but after Ron left - there is certainly angst, but also intimacy. For me, that was one of the most compelling sections of DH. Harry and Hermione were together, and even though they were in a horribly difficult situation, they stayed together, and dealt with each other, and at least attempted to help each other with their own difficult emotions. When two people can make it through that, something so stressful and painful and absolutely calculated to tear even the strongest person to shreds - is it any wonder we see them as meant to be together? :)

Besides, she knew he’d set up the wards at the mouth of the cave and he wouldn’t have gone outside the wards.

Can't help but note that the idiot did exactly that in DH. It was one of many "can't think of a (good) reason but the author needs me to do it to progress the simplistic plot the way she wants" moments.

I liked the parallels of each seeing the other dead. (Well, 'like' as in 'for the purpose of the story', I don't *like* seeing our good guys down, you know what I mean. :-)) It's a powerful way of showing how they are each #1 in the other's priorities/thoughts. Harry's reaction was one step further from what we saw in the Ministry battle - from panic to resigned defeat/shutdown.

Nice story (if angsty), a good 'different choice' branch for when the two of them were just on their own!
