Love the way you captured Ron's voice, a Ron who is older and wiser but still totally Ron: "Ron knew because he’d once-in utter exasperation-counted. And then been horrified at the thought that he’d clearly spent too much time with Hermione to be doing such a thing." Freaking brilliant.
Heh, Ron the frustrated observer. I don't think I've witnessed quite this variant before.
Harry being scared of losing Hermione's friendship is a common trope but you introduced and detailed it very well, more so than other stories I've read, which just devote a sentence or two to the excuse.
(You've got me wondering now if another dimension could yet be added. In your story Harry's worried about how *he* would feel if he lost Hermione as a friend. "I just ... need her." Thinking about it I could see how he might also be worried about *her* reaction, how *she* would feel. After all, that's what true love is - putting the other's feelings ahead of your own. Would she be upset, would she be angry, would she be worried that she can't trust me, would she feel obliged to leave ... just thinking aloud. Anyway, I liked the paragraphs you dedicated to giving the I CAN'T LOSE HER FRIENDSHIP some body.)
