Green Gables looks particularly pretty on a clear winter's evening, when the sun has just set and stained the snow rose and gold and orange, and the windows glow comfortingly into the settling dusk. It looks everything calm, and peaceful, and you know that inside there will be a crackling fire, and the smell of baking bread.

From the window by the door, Gil can just make out the brightness of her hair though Marilla Cuthbert's lace curtains, just barely hear the laughter, spilling out into the night the way the light from the room does.

So his smile is already very bright when he knocks on the door.

"Get that, will you, Anne?" Marilla calls from her kitchen, where she is busy mixing the bread dough. "I'm all over flour."

So Anne, still smiling, goes to the door, and opens it.

Amazing that her smile can get brighter, but it does, and gray eyes glow.

"Hello, Gil."

"Hello, Anne," he says, pulling her into a tight hug.

He'd like to kiss her, but he's not quite brave enough to do that when he doesn't know where Marilla is.

Or Mrs. Rachel, for that matter.

Anne smiles into his shoulder, the wool of his coat cold against her cheek.

"It's good to see you. And you came just in time for the one quiet moment we've had today--Davy is upstairs and Dora is in the kitchen with Mrs. Lynde."

It's positively providential, is what it is.
