I love writing about reality within fiction. Even in a fantasy universe, there is a lot of truth to be found in the characters, their situations, and how they deal with them. My goal when writing characters is to either help the reader find something they recognise about themselves in the story or the characters, or to make them see a fictional character as a living human being (or sentient lifeform...hey, it's fanfic) who goes through the same crap as we do and maybe more.
So, I suppose by reality, I really mean personal reality. Everyone sees things differently, notices things others might or doesn't notice certain things. I like to shift that perception and elicit awareness of either a character, theme, or idea.
