No, but they haven't smashed any particles together. That's the real kicker. Just wait til they start smashing things together looking for dark matter. Satan himself will probably rise up from the center of the earth's core, laughing, while he makes us all slaves in his underground sulfur mines.

Nobody really believes that the LHC will destroy the world. Or if they do, they don't care too deeply for their lives or anyone else's life, because I haven't seen any attempts to violently take over the facility to prevent the apocalypse from happening.

The best thing is when commentators talk about how the $9 billion could have gone toward a cure for cancer or feeding the hungry. Aw boo hoo. Those people are going to be dead in 100 years just like the rest of us. On the other hand, even a minor scientific discovery using the LHC could have relatively permanent impact. Probably more impact than any of those people who would have been cured or fed. Booyah! Take that, cancer people!
