Phyllis F. Koenig taught physics and environmental sciences at Erie Community College for 25 years, serving as department chair for many years until her retirement in 1995. She also worked for New York State providing environmental audits, helping residents across Western New York upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes, mostly in East Buffalo.

Mrs. Koenig passed away unexpectedly at home on January 20, 2008 at the age of 72.

In retirement, she was active with Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Club. She enjoyed painting, gardening, photography, cooking, and traveling. The Koenigs spent many recent winters in Tucson, Arizona.

Phyllis June Farrell was born in Troy, NY (near Farrell Road), the daughter of William and Esther (neé McKeon) Farrell. She graduated from the New York State College for Teachers (now SUNY Albany), then received graduate degrees in chemisty and physics at Iowa State University. For her thesis she tested the semiconducting properties of magnesium silicide.

The Koenigs came to Tonawanda in 1960, then moved to a custom-built home in Wheatfield in 2002. She attended mass at St. Edmund's Roman Catholic Church in Tonawanda for most of her adult life.

Mrs. Koenig is survived by her husband, Forest (married for 49 years); three sons David ("Alex" to friends) of Toronto, John of Oakfield, NY, and Paul of Garden City, MI, as well as their spouses Merle von Thorn, Sharon Koenig, and Uwe Grosse; grandchildren Jennifer and John Jr.; brother William Farrell (spouse Patricia) of Daytona Beach Shores and sister Jean Farrell of Troy, NY. She is missed by nephews, cousins, her aunt Lucy McKeon, and other relatives, students, former colleagues, and friends. Her sister Joan Farrell passed away in 1997, and Nike, the family cat, passed away on January 14, 2008.
