“Love is the movement” - To Write Love On Her Arms (a non-profit organization)
I want to change the world. I recognize that this is hardly the simplest of undertakings and may appear frivolous coming from a seventeen-year-old, but I assure you that I know of and accept all possible ramifications of my words. I want to do more than simply exist. I want to make a difference; I, in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, want to be “the change I wish to see in the world”.
The world is suffocated by hate and oppression. Acts of discrimination and violence are prevalent in our society, and only catalyze more instances of it. We are told that “those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it”; however we are repeating it every day. In the simple use of disparaging words, in the looks of contempt, in the lack of knowledge or concern about crisis situations in other countries, we are repeating the darker moments of our past. When did abhorrence for others become tolerable?
In order to love, we must understand why people hate. In America, we are a vastly uneducated, ignorant and vain collection of people. Binge drinking and drug problems are on the rise in our nation’s youth. While teenagers are looking for the next party to attend, there are people in other countries trying to survive. These people are starving, suffering from no fresh water source, fleeing from rebel armies, fighting diseases we in the United States do not have to worry about, struggling to live just one more day, and living with a hope that better days are on the horizon.
We as Americans are drowning in our own pools of selfishness spawned by the media’s negative images. We cannot even imagine the pain and oppression that dominate other societies. The values of humanity, fairness, and equality are shot. We are too focused on money, or the objects that money can buy us. Money tears apart families, integrity, and love. Having all the money in the world will not bear significance when you die. What matters is how you spent your life on Earth. What matters is what you have done to change the world.
We only have one world and we only have one short life in that world. Why not try to make a difference? Something is dreadfully wrong in the world we live in, and instead of ignoring it, everyone should at least attempt to make a change- to love more and to hate none. We must believe that our voice can mean something.
We live in a beautiful world, if we choose to acknowledge it. My generation has the power to change the world and our own minds, opinions, and thoughts are still developing. The time to start the revolution is now. Love can change the world; It can make the difference in the lives of millions. We must pass love on.
if you read all of that, then I love you.
