37th Wheel of Fate [Action]

[Today is a fairly busy day for the thirteenth Murakumo.

It's been more than a week since her own run-in with Kusanagi - enough time that she's almost completely recovered, thanks to acuitas's healing leaving her with only the blood loss and one minor complication to deal with. Most of that time, she'd spent resting or trying to occupy herself with other ( Read more... )

[Action] | Today is a day for uncomfortable meetings with Murakumos semper_cogitans June 30 2011, 20:56:48 UTC
[When Nu swings by the library to grab those books, she might spot a certain little scientist - perhaps blearily remembered from one very uncomfortable day near the fountain - sitting at a small table in the library. Unlike the books she might be concealing the contents of, his are an eclectic mix of topics - turtle anatomy stands out, but there are also several books on general vertebrate anatomy, medical practises and even a few history texts. (He's still trying to become more familiar with other cultures.) The most interesting thing is the nanocomputer propped in the scientist's lap - a stark contrast to all the books, it's currently projecting reams of data while he occasionally consults one of the books. He's so engrossed in writing his reports that he doesn't notice the silver-haired Murakumo - but she's not quite so encumbered.

... Feel like talking to this strange person who wanted to help you so long ago, Nu?]

... Seithr... Doctor Faye-Ling s-spoke about that, actually. She said it was... qu-quite dangerous to the inhabitants of your world...

[As far as he understood. Also, apparently it wasn't something that an air filtration plant could fix.]

Affirmative. Prolonged exposure to seithr will... cause addiction, degeneration and mutations. [Seithr is nasty if you're dealing with too much of it. Nasty. And this is pretty much the abridged version of its documented effects.

...Let's just ignore the fact that there's actually a source of the stuff present in this very library right now. It's not like anyone here is aware of that - ν-13 herself included.]

... That seems... r-remarkably unpleasant... and Doctor Faye-Ling told me th-that there was no easy method of filtration or o-otherwise nullifying it...

[Even if Robert knew that Nu was a source of seithr, it's not like he would do anything to her.]

... So h-how does one go from converting seithr into... "ars magus", to use?

Ars magus is... a spell that draws seithr from the surroundings. [That's pretty much the basic principle. You cast an ars, it uses up some of the seithr in your surroundings, and depending on the ars you cast, that seithr is turned into energy for the ars' effect. Cloaking someone's presence, controlling the temperature in a certain area, sealing a message... you name it, there's probably a type of ars magus for it.]

So the seithr itself powers the ars magus... [This is fascinating stuff. He's going to have to include it in his paranormal report... in fact, he just may be typing it down right now.]

Is there a... c-conversion process? Or... or is it something that is... difficult to explain? [A lot of magic tends to fall into the latter category, apparently.]

Affirmative. Seithr is... converted into energy. [Which is then used for the ars' function - or to power an ars armagus, or a machine that operates similarly. Though this is more or less the extremely simplified version of the process. Mostly because canon never bothers to explain exactly how that process works beyond what she's said so far.]

I would... have th-thought you would have some familiarity with the... t-technological processes of your world... [Since she's some... interesting blend of organic and inorganic elements. He remembers that she insisted she was not a non-organic sapient, though... perhaps she is simply akin to a transhumanist, via whatever process produces her species...?

Of course, she is supposed to be a weapon. That knowledge sends a bit of a chill through him - but he'd be a hypocrite if he rejected her just for that. After all, he's friendly with Daisy.]

Explanation of technological processes is... not my primary function. [She can say what's listed in her database, but that's about it. For a more specific explanation, he'll probably have to ask someone who actively researches this kind of thing.]

I understand... er, by t-training, I am an... astrobiologist, but the nature of this place has led me to... broaden my knowledge base.

[Robert shifts a little awkwardly in his seat. He's... happy that this is going as well as it has, but he's still more than a bit nervous.]

[Action] awakenedchaos July 16 2011, 20:13:48 UTC
... [No vocal response here. She knows what an astrobiologist is; the definition of the term exists in her database. And with that in mind, she doesn't really see the need to say anything in response to Robert's statement.

...in other words, you could that she kind of missed the point of what he's saying.]

[... Whelp, silence as a response usually isn't a good thing. At least, that's what Robert has been led to believe with his limited social ability...

He's... going to try again then.]

Have... have you found yourself, er, having to learn n-new things here, yourself...?

[It's not really a bad thing in this one's case, honestly; it just means she doesn't have anything to respond with at the time. For someone like her, it's easier to react to an inquiry than a simple statement, really.]

...Affirmative. [A few things, yes. It's kind of necessary when trying to adapt to different circumstances, after all.]

I... I rather enjoy it, most of the time. [He smiles a little waveringly.] Though... I suppose learning under... duress is not so much.

... [Again, no verbal response, though if the look on her face is any indication, she seems to be trying to process what he just said. Enjoying learning new things? That's unheard of for her. It's always been either out of necessity, or to acquire a skill that would let her pass time in a somewhat more productive way than constantly wandering.

Then again, it's no surprise that her view on this would differ from that of a normal human, right...?]

[Robert is used to everybody enjoying learning. It's strange to him, to think that somebody really wouldn't want to learn things - really wouldn't care about them beyond having to...

But, uh, all this silence is unsettling, and Robert really doesn't want to raise Nu's ire. He's enjoyed surviving this long.]

... A-Ah, well... ... I do not want to interrupt you too much, Nu. I... I s-see that you have... books with you, and you must be wanting to... t-to take them to your home...
