Well, see that on his back? Even if he doesn't know Ember, he's still a fire Pokémon and he's still got flames on his back. Although Pokémon seem to be able to mostly control if what they emit hurt you.

In the games, you have to fight the Gym Leaders to get more powerful, and then you go to the Elite Four and Champion, and then you can do anything. Maybe even get home! The first one can't be too tough... unless you started with Cyndaquil as well. [Oh Scott, you and your old-school Red. h-he honestly believes that brock is the first gym leader of johto as well. idiot.]
