Ellie was so glad it was Saturday. After the dance and drinking a lot of spiked punch, she was very appreciative of the fact she didn't have to set her alarm. Even Vishuddha knew not to wake her.
So when she heard someone knocking on her door, she thought she was dreaming. She hoped she was dreaming, at least. But the knocking seemed unrelenting. Ellie opened her eyes after a moment, knowing now that she was not dreaming.
"Mommy!" said a muffled voice on the other side of the door.
Ellie then shot up in her bed, knowing what the meant.
"Oh not this again," she sighed as she climbed out of her bed, heading toward the door. When she opened it, there was an
adorable little girl, about six-years-old, facing her.
"Hey there," Ellie greeted her daughter. This has happened before. She already knew to just go with it. "Do you know where you are?"
"Uh huh! You and Uncle Chuck told me about this place. Everyone thinks it's just a story you made up to tell me, but I knew better." The little girl was bouncing excitedly. "I went through a portal!"
Ellie smiled. "Well, good. Then I don't have to explain it. Can you tell me your name?"
"Clara. Daddy thought of it," she said sweetly.
"Well, he has good taste. That's a very pretty name," Ellie said. It was a nice normal name. "Who is your daddy?"
"His name is Devon, but everyone calls him Captain Awesome," Clara giggled. "Because he is the awesomest daddy ever."
"Devon..." Ellie was sure no one with that name had gone to school here. Maybe someone she would meet in the future? Or maybe not at all. Who knew how many universes were out there.
Vishuddha wandered over by then to inspect this new person. Clara, of course, was delighted by the dog. She knelt down to his level. "Awwww, doggy! Can I pet him?"
"Of course you can, he's very gentle," Ellie assured, finding this sight adorable.
Ellie was about to ask Clara if she wanted breakfast when
another girl, this one about eleven, wandered into the room. It was still open after all.
"Hey Mom," she said nonchalantly, as if this wasn't at all weird. "Got any eggs? It's morning here, right?"
Clara eyed the girl warily. "Who are you?"
The two girls did look like sisters, but this was proof the two didn't know each other.
"I'm Charlie."
Ellie, once again, smiled. She was named after her uncle apparently.
"Um, no eggs here, but we can go out for breakfast," Ellie said. "So, uh, who is your dad?"
"Noah." Ellie had to think about that for a moment. Why did that name sound familiar?
Her jaw? Totally met the floor just then when she eventually figured it out. "Oh my god. Seriously?"
Charlie just shook her head. "You say that all the time at home, too. Especially when Dad does something dumb. Or Morgan. Or anyone."
Ellie raised an eyebrow. She must have said it a lot, then.
"Why does she have a different daddy?" Clara asked before Ellie could comment further.
"You're both from different universes...you know what, I will explain later."
Ellie facepalmed. Yeah, this was going to be a long weekend. For now, there was a phone call she had to make.
