Name Change/Passport Questions

For those of you (mostly the guys I'm guessing) who have legally changed your name through the probate system:

How long has the process taken from first filling out the paperwork and appearing in court/getting your judgment (or whatever it's called)?

When Yig and I married nearly three years ago, I took his last name.  Even though we legally married ( Read more... )

How much is an issue to go court and change your last name legally? Here in Canada to assume a married name is really easy, passport etc,,,, are easy. to change your name otherwise is a real pain, publishing in two papers, all sorts of crap.

In RI I fill out a form and bring (send?) it to probate court along with my birth certificate. They put it in the paper and send my info off to the state police to do a CORI. They tell me when to appear in court to yea or nay me. Not sure how long it takes really...that's the big question.

I'm sorry I can't answer your questions, but I do believe there is an expedited process for hurrying along your passport. Of course, you have to pay extra......but it's there.

Good luck. I'm sorry you have to go through all of that.

There is that...they can expedite passports in about 2-3 weeks currently, but they are wanting big money for it, so I'm hoping to avoid that messy end of things.

Thanks!

The whole court/legal name change process is different from state to state, and I don't remember which state you are in ( ... )

I'm going to end up having to call probate anyway. See, the tricky part is I am supposed to fill in my current name, and I'm supposed to fill in the name I want to change it to. But they are the same. Hah! My current, legal name is what it is, even if the US Passport agency won't recognize it. It's changed with Social Security and IRS and all of my bank accounts and other documentation. Has been for three years. THe only thing left in my maiden name is my birth certificate. And it's all legal.

So...I have to ask the court to legal change my legal name from what it is to what it is. Putting my maiden name down as my current name would be falsification.

I'm going to call probate on Monday and see if they can offer any guidance, or if they have any expedited process for this piece since my name already is my name.

Just.....extraneous and a stupid waste of time, oh yeah, and money.

Thanks for the feedback!
